Shri. Chanabasappa. Shivappa Kombali, President of Natural Resources Development society (R), and a Progressive farmer of Kakol, District Haveri, Karnataka. He is also a associate member of Novel foundation for Science-Bangalore. He was awarded as "man of the year 2005" by Kannada Prabha a Kannada daily. He is also called as "Kakol Bhagheerath" for his innovative effort to recharging ground water in his village. This is an preliminary indication of the progress on water conservation movement in India. He is active in a network of rural progressive farmers working towards Natural Resources Development. Shri. C. S. Kombali, has educated up to undergraduate level. He is deeply involved in understanding how people view and manage natural resources, how the manifold human demands affect the productivity as well as diversity of the biological resources. He is currently formulating a programme of organizing local communities to prepare strategies for sustainable use and conservation of water each in their own localities. He has recharged 22 open wells, situated in 300 acres of watershed in his local area. Still there are more than 100 open wells in his village with an average depth of 75-80 ft each. According his concept " Recharging through farm ponds is like injecting just bellow the skin, while recharge through open wells is like injecting into the blood veins. Open wells can be used as an alternative to farm ponds for ground water recharge. If there is no open well then go for excavation of farm ponds".
